The record outlives the piece
Every ornament we find is drawn once and then works three ways.
For the maker
A named person knits it by hand, to your measurement, and keeps the larger share of what you pay.
For the knitter
The same record, written as a chart you can work from yourself. Two are ready; the rest say so.
For the studio
Designers, architects and brands license a motif whose origin is documented. The maker is named in the licence and paid from it.
A tenth of our share, and a fifth of every licence, goes to the Heritage Preservation Fund.
You make. We handle the rest.

The record
Ornaments recovered from museum collections and from the makers themselves, written down so they can be worked again. Each one names the object it came from and where it was found.
What a record is
Every ornament is written down twice: as a chart a maker can work from, and as a vector drawing with its source beside it - the object, the collection, the region, the motif and what it meant. The description follows the format European archives use, so a record can leave this site without losing where it came from. Relief models of the carved and woven records are in preparation.
Licensing
Designers, architects and brands can license a record for their own work - printed cloth, tile, panelling, a whole collection. The maker who carries that ornament is named in the licence and paid from it, and a fixed part goes to the preservation fund. Tell us what you are making and we will come back with terms.

Your name stays on it
Not an anonymous seller ID. Your name, your region, your technique - on the page and on the tag. And what you changed in the pattern is written there as yours, not hidden.
You know your share before you start
No listing fees. No paying to be seen. No money held for months. A fixed share of the price the buyer pays, agreed before you cast on.
Where the money goes
The buyer pays one price, and most of it is yours. Shares are counted on that price without the VAT inside it. Until 1 December 2026 our share is 25%, so you keep 75%. Coordinators and museums are paid out of our share, never out of yours.

What we can't promise
We're at the start. There are no sales yet, so we can't promise you a number. What we can promise is a share you know in advance and conditions that don't change behind your back.
If you're looking for a guaranteed salary, this isn't the place, and we'd rather say so now.
Beyond selling
The ornaments you work with become records we sell - and you get a share of every record sold, not just every piece. Later: in-person workshops in your region, recorded courses, and a permanent archive of what you know.

Your ornaments on record
We document where each ornament comes from - in textile, clay, metal or wood - and keep it. If a workshop closes, what it knew doesn't disappear with it. That's the part museums and archives talk to us about.
What we take, and for what
We take the price the buyer pays, minus the VAT inside it, as 100%. Nothing else. The tax in a price was never ours to split, and never yours.

This is a commission, not a wholesale discount. We don't buy your stock - your pieces stay yours until they reach the customer.

A base inside the EU, so parcels from outside it stop being expensive and unpredictable for everyone we work with. In-person workshops in your region. And a growing record of the ornaments each direction is built on.

About KATUN
Somewhere in every country there is a person who still knows how a thing was made - a pattern, a glaze, a way of forging or carving that nobody wrote down. Almost none of it was written down. The knowledge lived in hands, and it ends when the hands stop.
KATUN exists to keep the making alive, not just the memory of it. We find the object - in a regional museum, in a family chest, with the last person still working that way - record its ornament and where it comes from, and put it back into production with a maker who can carry it.
The record is exact: the object, the collection, the region, the motif. The piece is not. A maker reads the record through their own hands, changes the scale, the material, sometimes the composition - and we say on every page what they changed. That is how this knowledge always travelled. A copy belongs under glass; a reading belongs in use.
It started with textile in Montenegro, because that is where we live and where the first record came from. It doesn't end there. Clay, metal, wood, weaving, embroidery - different materials, the same method: find it, record it, make it again.
Two things follow from that. The record does not stay on this site: it is kept as a drawing with its source attached, and designers, architects and brands can license it, with the maker who carries the ornament named and paid every time. And a fixed part of everything, sale or licence, goes into a preservation fund that buys material ahead, pays for the recording, and helps restore the objects we worked from.
We're not a marketplace. We choose what goes on this site, we know every maker by name, and we take care of everything that isn't making: the photography, the writing, the translation, the shipping, the buyer. The maker makes. That's the whole arrangement.
Who we are
Heritage Preservation Fund
Craft does not survive on orders alone. Part of what this site earns goes back into the making itself.
A tenth of our own share on everything sold here, and a fifth of every licence fee, goes into a fund we keep apart from our own money. It comes out of our share, never out of the maker's: a maker's 65% is untouched by it.
What it pays for
- Raw material bought ahead - wool, thread, clay, glaze - so a workshop can work through a winter without waiting on an order.
- The recording itself: travel to a collection, permission and photography, and drawing the chart from the object.
- Restoration of an object we recorded, agreed with the museum that keeps it.
- Teaching: paying an older maker for the time it takes to teach a younger one.
Where it stands
The fund is at zero. Nothing has been sold yet, so nothing has gone in. Once it starts, we publish once a year what came in and what it paid for, naming every workshop and museum it reached. Until then there is nothing to report, and we would rather say that than round it up.

Prices
All prices are in euro and include worldwide shipping. Customs charges in your own country are not included: parcels entering the EU are subject to import VAT from the first euro and, since 1 July 2026, to a small fixed customs duty. These are paid by you on delivery.
How an order works
You add pieces to the cart and send us the order by WhatsApp or email. We reply with availability and payment details. Your order is confirmed once payment reaches us - not before. Most pieces are made to order, and the making time is shown on each piece.
Shipping
We ship worldwide with tracking, and shipping is included in the price of every piece. Delivery normally takes 7-14 working days in Europe after the piece is finished. We send you the tracking number the day it leaves. If a parcel is lost in transit, we replace it or refund you in full.
Returns
You have 14 days from the day the parcel reaches you to tell us you want to return it. Write to katun.montenegro@gmail.com. Send the piece back unworn and in the condition it arrived, and we refund the price within 14 days of receiving it. Return postage is yours unless the piece arrived faulty or wrong.
Pieces knitted to a measurement you give us are made for you alone and cannot be resold, so they are outside the 14-day return. This is stated on every such piece before you order. It does not affect your rights if a piece arrives faulty or is not what we described.
Pattern charts are digital files. Once the file has been sent to you, it can't be returned.
Faulty pieces
These are made by hand, so small differences between pieces are normal and are not faults. If something is genuinely wrong - a hole, a seam that fails, the wrong piece - send us a photo and we repair, replace or refund it.
Workshop places
A place is held once payment reaches us. Cancel more than [X] days before the date and we refund in full; after that we can move you to another date but can't refund. If we cancel a session, you get the full amount back.
Law
These terms are governed by the law of [country]. Last updated [date].
Privacy

What we collect
Only what you type. If you fill in a form, we get your name, your email and whatever you write in the message. If you send an order, we get what you tell us in WhatsApp or by email - including the delivery address you give us. We ask for nothing else.
What we do with it
We answer you, and we send you your parcel. We don't sell your details, and we don't add you to a mailing list you didn't ask for.
Who else sees it
Form submissions pass through FormSubmit, which forwards them to our inbox. Email goes through Google. Messages go through WhatsApp. Parcels go through the postal service, which needs your address to deliver. Each of them has its own privacy policy.
Your cart
What you put in the cart is stored in your own browser and never reaches us until you send the order. Clearing your browser data clears it.
Cookies
We set no tracking cookies and run no analytics. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which sees your IP address as part of serving them.
Your rights
Write to katun.montenegro@gmail.com and we'll tell you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. We keep order records for [X] years because [reason - usually tax law], and delete everything else once the conversation is over.
